JUNE FRIESEN, RM, IBCLC
I am thrilled to be back in Saskatoon after practicing as a Registered Midwife in Vancouver since 2002. I started my midwifery career by apprenticing in Saskatoon in the early 1900's when I was very involved in the politics of regulating midwifery here. I first went to BC to go through the Assessment process to be registered to return to my practice here. However, I ended up staying in BC and with other midwives , Built a practice at Commercial Drive Midwives in Vancouver which has provided care to hundreds of wonderful women. We supported numerous midwifery students and midwives trained in other jurisdictions. As well, I had the opportunity to be very involved with the Midwives Association of BC. Who I am is very influenced by 20 years as a volunteer La Leche League Leader during the 70's to the 90's. I saw first hand the changes women make in their lives when they are empowered through education and support. My passion for breastfeeding continues, and I maintain certification as a Lactation Consultant. As a young woman, I didn't know about the option of midwifery, so I started on this path as a registered nurse. Relationships with midwifery colleagues, our students and other members of the health care team have been extremely important in my development as a midwife and I am always striving to hold the space for both evidence-based and traditional practices. In the 1980's our family lived in the Congo. Our 3 years there instilled in me a great respect for birth, the strength of women and the reality of multiple cultures. Our 3 children are grown now, and 2 favourite little grandsons bring delight into our lives and an overwhelming magnet bringing us back to Saskatoon, where we so appreciate living in a city with many familiar faces. It is wonderful to see the work of so many individuals come to fruition with the development of regulated midwifery integrated into the healthcare system in Saskatoon. |
