In 2007 the Saskatchewan College of Midwives recommended that basic midwifery education be a baccalaureate degree in midwifery.

There are various ways to registration as a midwife in Saskatchewan:

1. Registration in another Canadian juristriction. To be eligible , the midwife must be in good standing and hold an unrestricted licence in that juristrction
   
   
2. Graduation from an approved education program. Four-year direct-entry programs leading to a university degree see below

4. The Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Project (MMBP) is a bridging program for qualified midwives educated outside of Canada. It'’s designed to help each midwife learn how to use her skills in a Canadian context. The MMBP will assist in preparing a midwife to meet the requirements for registering and practising as a Canadian midwife.

Saskatchewan does not have its own education program. This is a problem for women wanting to train as midwives who cannot leave the province.

Although there are midwifery schools in the United States who have distance education programs clinical experience can be difficult to arrange and The Saskatchewan College of Midwives does not recognize these programs at this time.

We would urge anyone considering this route to be fully aware of the problems and to consult the IMPP or the MMBP programs to determine their eligibility requirements to then transition into one of those programs for eventual registration in a Canadian province.
