BECOMING A MIDWIFE
In 2007 the Saskatchewan College of Midwives recommended that basic midwifery education be a baccalaureate degree in midwifery.

There are various ways to registration as a midwife in Saskatchewan:
  1. Inter-provincial reciprocity. To be eligible, a midwife must have an unrestricted license from her provincial governing body and have practiced for at least one year in that capacity.

  2. Graduation from an approved education program. Four-year direct-entry programs leading to a university degree see below

  3. International Midwifery Pre-Registration Program (IMPP) offered by:
Ryerson University in Ontario-Alison Gaul, Program Administrator

  4. Prior learning and experience assessment (PLEA). For international trained midwives or those trained by apprenticeship or self-study. PLEA includes a portfolio assessment, an extensive national written exam and clinical and OSCEs (objective structured clinical examinations). The PLEA is being replaced by the Multijurisdictional Midwifery Bridging program.

  5. The Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Project (MMBP) is a bridging program for qualified midwives educated outside of Canada. It’s designed to help each midwife learn how to use her skills in a Canadian context. The MMBP will assist in preparing a midwife to meet the requirements for registering and practising as a Canadian midwife. For more information on this important new program please visit www.midwiferybridging.ca. The deadline for applications for the program beginning spring 2009 is October 19, 2008.

Other Midwifery Education Programs

Saskatchewan does not have its own education program. This is a challenge for young people wanting to train as midwives who cannot leave the province. There are Midwifery schools in the United States which provide:
  1. some in-house midwifery education
  2. direct you to some distance education, and
  3. candidates have to organize their own clinical practicums (This can be very challenging)
There is opportunity for students using this route to undertake the North American Registry of Midwives exam (NARM) and then proceed to undertaking the IMPP or Prior Learning & Experience Assessment PLEA process highlighted above, or in the future the Multijurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Program MMBP highlighted above.

Some US based midwifery programs:
  1. University of Utah
  2. Seattle Midwifery School
  3. Aviva Midwifery School
